Howell Travis Gage was born on January 22, 1902 in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico. At age 40, Howell married Essie Mae McDonald, daughter of Walter Lafayette McDonald and Perl Ora Jennings. Howell and Essie were married on Friday April 24, 1942 in Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico. Howell Travis Gage Howell Gage received his early education in Hope, New Mexico, spending his summers on the ranch, where roping was his hobby, and later attended New Mexico Military Institute. While still maintaing his ranching interests, he moved to Artesia to become sales manager of the Artesia Auto Company and later acquired and operated a filling station. In 1932, Howell Gage moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, to accept the appointment as deputy sheriff under Sheriff Walter McDonald, which was the beginning of his law enforcement career. He served as sheriff from 1939 to 1943, during which period, he organized the Eddy County Posse, the first of its kind in New Mexico, and served as president of the New Mexico Sheriffs' and Police Association for two years. Howell Gage was a member of the Artesia Masonic Lodge, the York Rite of Santa Fe, the Shrine of Albuquerque and past director of the Albuquerque Court No. 24, Royal Order of Jesters. Howell Travis Gage died on April 3, 1968 in Albuquerque, Bernalillio County, New Mexico, at age 66. He was buried in Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico. Return to Table of Contents
